GOTHIC [UPDATE]

RPG by Pyranha Bytes

A solution by Lu Richardson
---------------------------

There is already a most complete walkthrough for this game in The Spoiler
Centre, brilliantly written by Jerome Cukier as a direct translation of the
original German product.

However, I found that on playing the English version of the game things were
slightly different; so since this could be confusing, I hope nobody will mind
me giving an alternative solution.

The Product
-----------

This is an excellent RPG, unusual and most atmospheric. It's one of those
games that grabs you straight away and you can't leave it alone till you finish
it. Then you want to play it all over again, feeling you will do better next
time. Great stuff!

General tips
------------

As ever, if you get the "god mode" cheat from cheatcc.com you'll find progress
a great deal easier, but it's up to you. Me, I just hate getting killed every
five minutes.

OK, you've watched the intro and you are as puzzled as the rest of us. You
will have a conversation with Diego which will put you in the picture.

There are three Camps in the Colony and, though you don't actually have to, it
would be a good idea to join one of them. This solution is written with the
intention of joining the Old Camp, since there are certain advantages to that.
You will need to pretend to join the others, too, to get to know the people
there and gain valuable experience.

You can do things in any order and according to your abilities.

Money: the currency in this game is ore, so you are looking to exchange all
your surplus stuff for it, keeping only the minimum you need for yourself. If
you must buy things, pay with the items (such as meat and herbs) you can easily
collect here and there. Keep the ore for when it is requested of you. Also,
should you sell something you need by mistake, you can always buy it back from
the person to whom you sold it. By the way, check the important traders every
time a new Chapter starts, since they have new weapons, spells/magic items and,
more important, ore. Finally, the coins you will find here and there are
totally worthless.

Items: following on from the above, at first you have to pick up just about
everything you can because in the first Chapter you need every scrap of ore you
can get. There will come a point, and you will know it yourself, when you'll
have to be discriminating or you'll find you are carrying far too much when you
no longer need more ore, weapons or useful items. Very important are the rings
and amulets which modify your statistics.

Chests: make sure you have some lockpicks and that you acquire the skill as
soon as possible. Save before you attempt to open them, Control + arrow up to
kneel in front: try Control + up to see if they are not locked. If they are,
Control + left or right arrow, keep trying and make a note of the correct
sequence (for instance, Left, Right, Right, Left, Left) (ESC and arrow down to
leave the box once you've emptied). When you have the right sequence, reload
and go through the proper motions. This will save a lot on lockpicks which are
very expensive. Also, some chests/boxes cannot be opened at all without the
proper key.

Experience points: these are hard to get and you have to husband them
carefully. Don't waste them - for instance, learning how to get the most out
of the animals you slaughter is not really necessary, since you will find
enough stuff laying around, and easy to kill beasts provide you with meat and
so on. You will get more than sufficient to cover your needs. The best skills
to go for are strength (most important), dexterity (if you favour bows and
crossbows) and lockpicking (1 level will do), as well as training in weapons or
in magic.

Books: always look at books; one on Bloodflies will teach you how to get their
sting, which you can sell.

Combat: try to avoid trouble within the camps, particularly the Old Camp. If
you must fight, get out of combat mode as soon as you have knocked out your
opponent (incidently, you can rob them while they are out). Once on the
ground, you must not hit your opponent again or you'll kill him. Outside, some
animals you will be able to kill easily, particularly if you get into combat
mode already when you see them from afar and draw them to you singly or
manoeuvre yourself to approach them from the side and kill them one by one.
Note that you have to see the tag with the name of the animal nearest to you,
that's the only way you are going to hit it. If the animal moves beyond your
reach and another attacks you, turn to it so that you see it's tag; otherwise
you might be hitting fresh air while you get whacked yourself. If you meet a
beast you are not able to kill, run.

In this solution I only tell you about the places you must visit, but feel free
to explore all you want in other directions. There are many caves in rocky
environments, usually guarded by beasts.

Right, here we go, from the start:

CHAPTER 1

After you've spoken to Diego, save your game and walk about around the lake a
bit to see what you can pick up and to get used to the interface - which is
pretty dreadful until you get used to it.

Follow the only path available and fight the Meatbugs, getting their meat.
That's pretty difficult, too. At the gate, climb the ladder and talk to the
guards. Down again and continue along the path picking up *everything* you
possibly can. You should be able to find a pick and a rusty sword and later an
old sword (don't forget to equip your weapon!). Don't be in a hurry and search
around thoroughly.

You will meet Drax and Ralford, so get all the info you can. Continuing along
you'll come across a bridge and, along that...

The Old Camp
------------

Talk to the Gate Guard and say you've come to see Diego. Enter and, almost
straight ahead, by the gates of the Castle, you will see him. Talk to him and
get all the info you can. Then go to the entrance to the Castle and talk to
Thorus. Say you want to work for Gomez. He'll send to back to Diego: he
gives you a lot of information and your first quest. See if you can find Grim
here as well, he has important info.

If you've taken your time getting here it's probably nearly night time.
Because when it goes dark people go into their homes, you won't be able to see
them and you mustn't on any account barge into them. The best thing is to find
an empty hut and use a bed until next morning. There is one such hut near the
Arena. Don't bother to talk to more than a "Digger" or a "Shadow" but talk to
everyone with a name. This pattern recurs in the other two Camps.

OK, with your back to the Castle entrance, go left and start meeting people.
The first one will be Bloodwyn who wants protection money - only you don't have
any. Nevertheless you must agree to pay and do so when you have some ore.

Near him, talk to Baal Taran for some info. He'll tell you about Parvez, you
needn't do anything about that yet. Graham, from whom you need a map, lives in
one of the huts here (if it is getting dark, he'll be in his hut). He has also
other maps to sell, when you have the cash, and you will certainly need a
Colony Map. Without a compass, this map is your only guide.

If it is night time now, though, do nothing else and let's try and find an
empty hut. Keep going and along the way you'll meet Sly, who gives you another
job. You'll have to talk to Fletcher in the morning.

Go down hugging the Castle walls until you get to a sort of campsite (the
Market) where Fisk will approach you - exchange all your renewable items (i.e.,
herbs, meat, etc.) for ore. Make sure you keep a few beers, always handy. The
empty hut you are looking for is around here, set back from the rest. Use the
bed till morning, then continue going around the Camp.

You'll meet Mordrag with whom you can trade if you want. Past Mordrag you will
see a ruined hut; get behind the wall and use a pickaxe to kill the three
Meatbugs, getting their meat. Continue your rounds; you could go up a ladder
here and speak to Fletcher (you must speak to him before Snaf). You'll
eventually come to the Arena. Talk to Scally and to the fighters. Don't even
dream of challenging one of them just yet. In fact, you have to be at least
Level 4 and have a strength of 30; then you can challenge Kirgo and Kharim (and
you have to insult him), fight them, knock them out and then talk to Scally.
This gets him on your side.

Continue following the Castle wall and you will find Fingers. Speak to him,
but he can't teach you because you have no experience. He tells you about
Cavalorn.

Carry on and meet Snaf, who wants you to do him a favour; pay attention to all
he says. Just past him Mud attaches himself to you. A word about him. He is
a veritable pest and won't leave you alone. Draw him to the Arena or into his
own hut and beat him till you knock him out - he gets the message and leaves
you alone.

Right, back again in front of the entrance to the Castle, go around once more.

Give Bloodwyn his ore and find Graham. Insist on his giving you the map to the
Old Mine for free, but buy the other map I mentioned if you can afford it; move
on, talk to Whistler and undertake his commission. Carry on till you find Fisk
and ask for an elaborate weapon - he'll want 110 ore, but don't complain and
pay up, then take the weapon to Whistler. You get the extra 10 ore and
experience points, plus he will speak up for you.

Back to the Market, ignore Parvez for now, speak to Dexter and get another job.
Right, let's go up a ladder and do the next section up, around the Camp walls.
You will meet Guy (full of information, he even tells you about an empty hut
for you to use - I think it's the one with the two chests and the ham on the
table), Jesse, Herek (you could have a fight with him if you aren't careful;
pop him one if you have to and he will run away, get out of combat mode at
once), Dusty (it's important you talk to him), Jackal will ask for ore so give
it to him, and, near the Castle gate, in a dip, Gravo (he tells you who
matters).

OK, I think we've met everyone. Now for the first, easy task - Snaf's. Leave
the Camp by the S gate, by the collapsed tower. To the left of the path there
is a ruined hut with some interesting items.

To the right of the path you will find the hell mushrooms and also, behind
three molerats you will find Nek inside a little cave. Get what he's carrying.
Carry on collecting items all around here. If you were to leave the cave and
walk to the left until you see some climbable ledges, you'll get to see Gilbert
in a cave - finding him is worth 100 experience points. Every little bit
helps.

Now you can go back into the Camp, see Snaf (you can get three portions of his
stew every day), also Sly (give him the amulet) and Fletcher. You have now
enough experience to talk to Thorus and get another job (but don't deal with it
just yet).

Find Fingers and use your experience points on lock picking - this buys you
"brownie" points. Ask him to speak up for you to Diego.

If you have enough experience points, get Diego to train you in Strength.

Before you do anything else, save your game and start going into huts and
stealing from the chests. Some huts are very easy because nobody is near and
you are out of sight of the guards. If someone shouts as you go in, leave
immediately. You are looking to collect all the beer, apples, cheese, bread
and rice schnapps you can. Don't sell them.

When you have done everything you could, go to Mordrag. Talk to him saying he
has a problem and let him lead you to...

The New Camp
------------

Talk to a Rogue to know what's what. Go on in and when you walk past the
peasants Lefty tells you to give them water, so go to the Rice Lord and get it,
then go around to each peasant and talk to them, particularly the named ones.
Horatio can train you in strength for nothing, but won't just yet. When you
run out of water Lefty will tell you to do it again. Do so till all the
peasants have drunk. As you leave, Lefty will tell you to do this job every
day - disagree. You fight him and knock him down and the Rice Lord will also
attack you, so knock him down too. You can collect their weapons while they
are out, if you like. Talk to Lefty when he recovers to complete this mission.
Go into his hut and open his chest, even if you are attacked you won't have
much trouble.

Leave and before another gate you will meet Jarvis, who will give you a lot of
information. Go on and you will meet Homer, who wants you to kill a Lurker.
Turn your back on Homer, go to your left past a ladder and the peasant's huts
and you'll find the beast at the curve. Kill it and get it's claws, go back to
Homer for your reward.

Onwards, and to the left of the rock you'll come to the camp, take the ramp to
your left and talk to Baal Kagan, offer to help and agree to do as he says.
Start approaching each Rogue and named person and give them the weed and talk
to them. Don't trade with anyone but remember where the traders are. Keep to
the lower level (the path is in the shape of a horseshoe). When you've got to
the other end, drop to a group of men and meet Gorn. In order to have a hut
here you will have to speak to Shrike who is just behind you hammering a plank.
Go to him and talk, but he tells you to get lost. Knock him out and rob him
while he is out. When he comes to, talk to him again and tell him to get lost,
then go to Gorn and get your reward.

Before you go to Baal Kagan, go into the dip in the centre of the "horseshoe"
and talk to Cronos. He has some good stuff to trade for. In fact, there was
an interesting bug. I bought a ring of strength from him and noticed that
putting it on, taking it off and putting it on again increased my strength
permanently; so if you don't want to cheat, be careful.

Now for Baal Kagan: if you've distributed the weed talk to him and he will pay
you and offer you several things. Ask him to help you join his Brotherhood.

Now you need to get one level up because above the spot where Baal Kagan is
you'll find Lares. Get up the ramp just here. You'll get past two Rogues and
Roscoe without much difficulty. Talk to Lares and ask what else you can do.
Leave going the long way around up this level of the horseshoe to talk to
everyone. If you have the experience points, learn Acrobatics and, if you
want, Sneak. Buy a couple of bunches of grapes from Wolf.

Leave the cave and go up the ramp to the left to the Free Mine. Inside, go up
the wooden ramp and along to the end, climb up a ladder and at the end of this
platform you'll find Baloro who will offer you a wonderful weapon in return for
some food, which I hope you will have collected. There is no such weapon, of
course, but if you give him all the food you get 300 experience points. Go on
down and find the named scraper - tell him you want to join and he will give
you a uniform for free.

Leave the mine and go all the way to the Bar in the middle of the lake. Wear
the scraper uniform to get in and talk to Mordrag. Talk to the guys at the bar
the go round the back of it and check out the chest. Talk to Jeremiah about
the Rice Lord. Up some more and do the chests - don't mind Silas. Leave and
before you exit the Bar talk to Baal Isidro. Use each option as it comes and
he gives you his weeds. Now you have to find the traders Sharky and Wolf to
exchange the weed for ore. Return the ore to Baal Isidro (you can ask to see
his goods and get his ore back in exchange for the stuff you are carrying) and
then visit Lares to give him 400 ore for some experience points.

This is as far as I was prepared to go in the New Camp, since I didn't intend
to join it. It's up to you but I'm off to the Old Camp. On the way out, and
having talked to Jeremiah, if you speak to Horatio and say you want to fight
the Rice Lord he will train you for nothing and you will get + 5 strength.
Funnily enough if you were to kill the Rice Lord (i.e., hit him when he is
down), the peasants get all upset with you. So I didn't and left them to it.

Back in the Old Camp, do whatever you need to do and it's time to find Parvez
in the Market. Talk to him and follow him, letting him do the fighting (you
get the experience points and he waits while you get the meat, etc.), to...

The Swamp Camp
--------------

You'll have a word with the Gate guard first.

Go in and talk to Lester to find out what to do (don't ask him to show you the
way anywhere yet). Keep left (the outer perimeter) and talk to Joru (he gives
you an easy job, don't give him the prepared Dreamcall), also to Malvin
(remember Dusty?).

Follow the path around through the Temple courtyard and give the weed to Baal
Tyon, surrounded by his disciples; he smokes it and falls asleep. Wait till he
wakes up; he'll talk to you and you'll get more experience points. Follow the
path behind him and you'll get to Fortuno. He will give you your daily ration
of swampweed which you can take back to Joru for some important information.
By the way, smoking one of these weeds gives you 10 points of experience, once;
Dreamcall gives you 2 mana, once. If you like, buy these two types of weed for
yourself and use them straightaway.

Having talked to Joru, the first thing is to get Lester away from Baal Namib -
ask him to take you to the Temple (follow him) and talk to him. He'll tell you
what to do. Ask him to show you the way back to the gates, go there and do as
he says - Baal Namib will talk to you and will recommend you to Cor Kalom.
However, you have to get other Baals on your side.

From the entrance to the Camp, take the path to the right till you spot Ghorim.
Talk to him (v. difficult) and he will ask you to get Harlok to relieve him.
Go to Fortuno and find Harlok. Speak to him nicely twice. Nothing doing. Be
very quick and knock him out, get out of combat mode again. When he recovers
and you talk to him again he will have changed his mind and go off to relieve
Ghorim. This, by the way, leaves his hut free for you to use.

Visit Ghorim (he is in a hut) and the Baal Orun will talk to you and tell you
to gather all the swampweed, but not how (don't ask him). Turn your back on
him, start heading for the gate and pretty soon on your left you will see a
stone jetty, use it and wade through the water to reach Balor. He'll give you
half the harvest and ask you to find Viran. Walk along a narrow strip of land
and around the S, avoiding he swampsharks (if they attack, run; you can't beat
them yet), and you will find Viran, who will ask you to do a little job for
him. Go around the little islands killing bloodflies and avoiding the
swampsharks; take the opportunity to collect the large green and orange healing
herbs (49 Life), you'll need five much later. Go back to Viran when you've
done and you will get the rest of the harvest.

Go to Fortuno's and get up the ladder so you can go in to see Cor Kalom. If
Caine is here, talk to him and find out about Gor Na Drak. What you have to do
here is to wait till Caine is gone and then attempt to open one of the boxes,
the one to the left, to collect the recipe for Dexter.

Talk to Cor Kalom and give him the harvest. Leave and go to Baal Orun, who
will be now on your side and will also give you a sleeping spell.

Go to Baal Cadar the tutor, use the sleeping spell on one of the novices and he
will talk to you. You can buy from him a map of the Camp and anything else you
want. He is now also on your side. That's four of them and a lot of
experience points.

Next, find Baal Tondral near the smithy/Baal Cadar. He will speak to you and
ask you to recruit a new novice. You have to go to the Old Camp and get Dusty.
On the way, make sure you clear the path of beasts. If you don't yet have a
map of the Colony, buy one from Graham and study the way from the S gate to the
Brotherhood Camp to the SE, you must make no mistakes on the way there.

Talk to Dusty (up a ramp near the S gate, remember?) and say you will give him
100 ore. OK, he will follow you through the S gate and you will pay 100 ore to
the guards. Go straight on past the derelict hut and make for the bridge:
stop frequently to look behind you and make sure you don't lose Dusty. Get him
all the way to the camp (save before you enter, sometimes Dusty just
disappears) and take him to Baal Tondral. Talk to him and then to Dusty, who
joins his novices.

If you go want to join this lot, go to Cor Kalom again and he well let you be a
Novice. Plus he will have another task for you. Me, I went off instead to
the...

Old Mine
--------

Since you are going to need a torch or Light spells, make sure you have them
before you set off. Also, depending on the time of day, find Gor Na Drak so
that he teaches you for free how to deal with crawlers). Consult your map and
go to the bridge in front of the N gate of the Old Camp, cross the bridge and
find your way to the mine. On the way, pick up herbs and fight for experience
and meat.

A couple of things about the mine - don't waste time with the Ore Nuggets and
if you should meet a minecrawler, run towards the nearest guards and they'll
deal with it. For some reason you don't make a dent on them if you try to
fight them.

Go in and keep your eyes open, it's very easy to get lost. Talk to named
guards and diggers.

Find Aleph, he is down the first side cavern to your right (or behind a ladder,
depending on how you got there). Carry on down the main shaft. Talk to Snipes
then lure away Aaron. Tell him to go to Ian and that you have no idea what he
wants. Talk to Snipes again; you get the key to the box. Open it and get
everything (make sure Aaron has disappeared). Later, you'll sell the key to
Aaron.

Continuing down you'll meet Ulbert in the storeroom, talk to him (give him a
beer) and find out about the missing key. Don't lure him away yet. Go back to
Aleph and buy the key for 30 ore. Come back to Ulbert and lure him away. When
he goes, help yourself to the contents of the boxes and whatever is on the
table. Leave the storeroom and turn right. Here you will meet an angry Aaron,
sell him his key back. Ulbert will also be pretty cross. Talk to Ian, get all
the info and get the list. Talk to everyone here.

Then go down some more. You will see two Templars and a side cave full of
crawlers. Entice them out to the Templars, they'll kill them (get the
mandibles), then go inside the cave and a little further in you'll find a
useful ring. Continue down the main shaft and you'll get to the Smelting
Plant. Talk to people for info. Viper has a lot of ore, if you want to trade
your items for it. In a side shaft in which there are lots of skeletons you
will find a bow and arrows and, if you climb up the ladders, a ring; of course,
you'll have to get the crawlers to follow you out first, so that they can be
dealt with by the Templars. Go back to the main area and continue talking to
people. You'll also meet Ashgan who is guarding a gate down to the depths of
the mine where the queen crawler is waiting to be killed. Don't even think
about it right now. There is also another long side shaft full of crawlers.
If you are patient and lure them all out to the Templars, you will be rewarded,
amongst other things, with a wonderful weapon called Stone Crusher - though you
need quite a lot of strength to wield it. When you've done everything you
wanted here, go to the...

Old Camp again
--------------

See how close you are to get the next 10 skill points and if you are nearly
there go out and fight some beasties till you get the next level up. Then you
could go to Scally and get him to train you: if you want to learn the two-
handed weapon skill (and the best weapons in these game are two-handed) from
Thorus, you first have to learn two levels of one-handed sword from Scally.
However, you can avoid this by waiting until later in the game, when you will
be taught the two-handed weapon skill without having to learn the one-handed
sword first. If you are able, impress him by fighting his guys.

Do whatever you need to do, buy, sell, train, speak to whoever you have to in
order to complete a mission, etc.; for instance, Dexter and Thorus. When you
are ready to give Diego the map, save the game. At this point, you can always
start again from this saved game if you wish to join the other camps instead.
If you want to join the Old Camp (recommended) give the map to Diego and speak
to him about your esteem; it will probably be time to speak to Thorus. He'll
let you into the inner camp. First go to the left and speak to the Magician
Milten, handing the letter over (you might like to save your game, read the
wretched letter and restore as if nothing had happened), asking for your
reward. He will refer you to Torres who should be standing nearby (talk to him
to get it; choose Mana, when you drink the potion the increase in Mana is
permanent). Next go to see Gomez through the door with two guards. Speak to
Raven and he'll take you to Gomez. Speak to him and use up all the option save
that of Y'Berion (and of course, don't threaten him). You are in. Talk to
Raven again and get more information.

Now you can talk to everyone except the girl, go outside and search/talk
around. You will have noticed some chests to the left of the entrance, but
don't try to open them, the Guard won't let you. Upstairs you can open doors
and chests (nobody seems to mind) and get quite a lot of stuff and ore.

Outside find Skip and buy a better weapon if you need it but mainly trade in
all your stuff - you'll need 1200 ore. When you've finished here go out of the
gate and talk to Diego to buy better armour.

Now it's just a question of getting to the Swamp Camp again. Speak to Lester
and he will send you to Y'Berion at the Temple. I believe this is...

CHAPTER 2

Of course, you will have to talk your way through to speak to Y'Berion, and he
will set you a task and give you a map as well. So do as he says, leave the
camp and turn right and, using the map, keep going right till you come to an
altar thingie with four spikes. There you meet Nyras who is deranged and will
attack you - knock him down and relieve him of his property. Back to Y'Berion,
ask for a reward.

You now have to go to Cor Kalom (don't sell him your crawler jaws yet) who will
promptly send you to the Old Mine. Got a torch/Light spells and a health
potion at the very least? Get yourself over there and you know the way. Find
Ian and talk to him - he needs help. Go down a level, past the two Templars
and around to a cave entrance with a Guard. Go along the shaft, down a ladder,
fight the minecrawlers (collect the jaws) and get the gearwheel which is laying
on the floor.

Take it to Ian, who will tell you the password. Go all the way down to the
gate guarded by Ashgar and talk to him, eventually giving him the password. He
will request some Templars, so go down the ramp and up to the level beneath
Ian, talk to the Gor, go down to the Smelting Plant, talk to the two Gors near
Viper, who will agree to go to the gate (one of them requests a healing
potion). Go to Ashgar and talk to him, operate the winch and stand back. When
the dust settles down collect the jaws, go into the shaft and keep going down,
fighting crawlers (don't forget the jaws), till you get to the Queen. Kill her
and collect all the eggs around her. You can go back up now, talk to the Gors
and to Ashgar and make your way out of the mine talking to Ian when you go past
him. As you pass Drake he suggests you visit Thorus.

Why don't we do just that. Thorus will accept you into the guard and send you
to Stone the smithy to give you a uniform and a sword. You can report to Raven
if you like. Do any training/trading you want. On to Cor Kalom (when he
offers you a reward, choose Mana).

Of course, the eggs aren't enough. He sends you to the Temple Courtyard in
search of Talas. Talk to him and he will guide you to the Black Goblins caves.
Along the way, if any beasts are around he runs like a rabbit and leaves you
to deal with it, and then you have to go back and fetch him. At the caves, he
waits for you by the bridge. Go over, fight tons of goblins and with your back
to the entrance search the caves by going right. You will find what you are
looking for, and more, in a chamber with two chests which aren't locked. OK,
back to Talas, follow him to the Swamp Camp. Don't, however, go in yet - if
you go to report to Raven at this point, you get 500 experience points.

Go to Cor Kalom and he tells you to go to the Courtyard at night. Do so (sleep
till midnight). When you enter the courtyard there will be a video clip.
Watch. I knew it would all end in tears.

CHAPTER 3

When it's all over, go up the stairs of the Temple and talk to Cor Kalom and to
Cor Angar. He will send you to the Orc cemetery to report on Baal Lukor, and
tells you to find Talas to guide you. Do so. Talas will take you to a bridge
and make himself scarce. Cross the bridge to a warm welcome. When you've
disposed of all the nasties go into the caves and fight your way downwards
following the dead body trail. You will get to a large chamber in which two
Templars look placidly on while Baal Lukor fights off what looks like the
entire Orc nation. Go help him and make sure you don't hit him by mistake.

When all the orcs are dead, talk to Lukor.  You have to search three corridors;
start on the right one and be prepared to fight. In one of the rooms Lukor
will tell you to look in the niches. In what I would call an alcove there is a
switch which opens a grille door. Inside, amongst the bones, you will find
half a parchment. Show it to Lukor. Carry on searching the other corridors
and you will find the other half parchment amongst another set of skeletons;
again, show it to Lukor. As you move to the last corridor, Lukor finds out
what to do with the parchment. This last corridor leads to a kind of temple.
After you've dealt with all the orcs (get a Krush UrRok from the warrior, it's
a very good weapon), move to a group of four columns in the centre and Lukor
will go all mystical on you. He will head for a door - follow him and he will
hand you the spell for you to cast. Cast it and you will be on the other side
of the door. Explore around here and get everything you can, then use the
winch to let Lukor in. Lean towards him to invite him in and he will follow.
Just keep going in and to your left till you get to the skeleton which had the
Sword of Death in it. At this point Lukor goes bananas and attacks you, so
defend yourself and, when you knock him down, collect his sword.

Might as well leave. In the last big chamber before you get out of these caves
there are lots of grille doors and behind them, mummies. Search all the niches
for switches which open other doors and search all the mummies (as if they were
chests) to get what they are carrying. Leave when you've done.

When you talk to Cor Angar there will be another job for you. He needs special
herbs; if you haven't got them already, you know just where to get them - go to
the guys who were gathering swampweed and look around on the little islands.
While you are searching, by the way, you might come across a lonely hut in
which Shrat lives. Don't bother with him.

OK, give Cor Angar the herbs but Y'Berion up and dies. Cor Angar tells you
about Cor Kalom and he gives you a key for the chest in his lab, also a useful
spell. Go and get the stuff from the chest and then head for the New Camp.
It's a long walk.

You'll be greeted by Gorn who will give you some information. Go and find
Cronos and pick the option on the list about the Gurus. Pay attention to the
password. Go up as though you were going to see Lee but carry on. Give the
password and talk to Funestus... er... Fastidius... no, Nefarius, who will let
you through to Saturas. You have quite a talk and you get a map and another
useful spell plus you are sent next door on the right to Riordian to collect
some potions.

The Focus Stones
----------------

Right, leave the Camp and study your map. I don't know how ready you are for
this, but you can always search for the focus stones in any order you like. I
will describe how I did it, you do your own thing.

Right outside the first gate to the Camp, turn right and go up the path.
You'll meet some Snappers and if you feel like it, in a little cave to your
right, you can fight another beast for a ring and a potion. Carry on along the
path and you will have to come to Milten's aid. Talk to him and agree to do
this together. Follow him and enter the cave. Make for the skeletons and give
them what for. The Guardian will be busy with Milten. As you as you can, cast
the spell Milten gave you on the Guardian. When all is safe, search the
Guardian for a key and the talisman, which you give to Milten. Deal with the
chests and get the focus stone. Go out and rejoin the path.

Look at the map again, I'm going to the SE. As you go along here, check out
for caves off the path for interesting stuff. You will meet with your first
pack of orc dogs and that's just a taste of what is to come. There will be
tons of orcs along the path so keep your eyes open and get into combat mode as
soon as you spy them. As they run towards you, find a good spot from which to
fight because you mustn't get surrounded. Anyway, you'll come to the top of
the mountain and when you can actually see the Fort you were going to visit, go
to your right and find a cave with a door and enter it (you'll have to fight
the beasts, first). Inside a chest, an orc hammer (keep it, don't sell it,
you'll need it later). Equip it and go back to the path. As you advance
towards the Fort, you will see a bridge and on it a Stone Golem. You can take
a potion of speed and run past him or you can bash him with the hammer, killing
him quite easily if you've got the strength.

At any rate you will meet Lester at the other end. Talk to him. Go into the
fort and fight the harpies. Actually, Lester can kill them all while you file
your nails and you'll get all the experience points. Search around. In a room
with a huge circle on the floor (i.e., a pentagram), near the chest you will
see a lever. This opens a door to a lab and, after killing the skeletons, you
can pick up quite a few potions.

Eventually Lester will go up a ladder. Follow him. On a balcony you will be
able to open the chest and find the document Lester wanted. Give it to him and
he will give you some spells, after which he leaves. First, continue exploring
and climbing up ladders. Right at the top there is a chest with interesting
things inside. When you've finished, go back to the balcony and place yourself
to the right, looking at an altar on top of a sort of gate - you'll see
something blue, that's the focus stone. Use telekinesis (if you don't have
enough mana points, start drinking potions or using amulets/rings) and you'll
get the focus stone to drop on the ground where you can get it. Go down the
ladder, get the focus stone, say goodbye to Lester and get back on the road.

There is no need to go to the altar to the E, of course, so we'll go to the NE,
to the ruined Monastery. Before you actually go over the bridge to get there
you might like to follow the path N to a strange tower. Go in and down the
stairs, keep going down and fighting skeletons till you get to a Skeleton Mage.
Kill him and search him to get a book and some spells. Read the Chromanin
book; the act of reading it will make the next book appear at the next place.
This is a terrible bore and you don't need to do it, but if you want the extra
points, I will tell you about it.

By the way, if you want more experience points, find one of those dead end
corridors here, stand at the entrance looking in and cast the Summon Skeleton
spells. You can easily kill the three skeletons which appear each time and
they won't fight back.

Anyway, leave this Tower and cross the bridge to your right. After the second
bridge go on up and you will meet Gorn. Talk to him, he'll lead you to a cave
in which a chest contains a curious spell, as well as a key. Now you lead Gorn
out, waiting for him, and go back up. When you get to the log, wait for Gorn
and walk carefully across (he kept falling off) and then let him deal with the
snappers, though you'll have to help. When you approach the closed gate Gorn
will give you a heavy hint, so use the "Turn into meatbug" spell and get
through the gap to the right of the gate and on the other side press [ENTER] to
be human again.

Use the winch and let Gorn through. Speak to him. Ignore the entrance to your
left and go clear off the snappers, then go through the cave, more snappers and
a shadowbeast (let Gorn get on with it), and get to a door. Open it and inside
there are two chests, one of them containing the focus stone. Leave making
sure Gorn follows you and, just as you aim to get through the gate, a juvenile
troll appears. He takes a lot of killing, but you do get 1000 experience
points. After this Gorn says goodbye and we are off to get the next focus
stone, which is in the NW.

Cross the bridge in front of the N gate of the Old Camp and cut across country
along the canyon. Ignore the Rogue camp on your right. Continue along the
canyon and you will soon come to Diego; chat a bit and follow him. Then you
are overwhelmed by goblins - you could help Diego kill them, if you are so
disposed. At the end, he goes off to distract the troll while you look for a
skeleton close by and a scroll on the ground near it. Cast this spell on the
troll and it will be easy to kill it. Diego bugs off, so follow him to the
winch. Try it and it's jammed, but Diego will fix it. Try again. Now you can
enter the cave and reach the altar with the focus stone, but you'll have to
deal with the harpies till they stop screaming. Get the stone and go to Diego
- if you need training, get it. He will go off and you will use the Teleport
spell to get back to Saturas.

You have a lengthy conversation with him, and the long and the short of it is
that you have to visit Riordian and Cronos for a reward and then try and
recruit the magicians of fire at the Old Camp.

CHAPTER 4

See the above guys if you want, then leg it back to the Old Camp. On the way
out you have rather a startling conversation with Lee. Carry on. You will
meet Scorpio in Cavalorn's camp and he carries an amazing assortment of
weapons. Approach the N gate of the Old Camp with care - if you try to go
through you will be attacked by Fletcher and his men and you can't win, so
don't. Instead, find Milten by the bridge and talk to him, he'll send you to
the S gate. There you will meet Diego who will give you a lot of information.

Teleport to Saturas, with whom you will also have a long conversation. At the
end of it, talk to Gorn, visit the Library near this chamber (the books you are
after are the Arcane on golems). Visit Lee and talk to him, he will accept you
as a mercenary and will sell you the best armour, at a price. Talk to Cronos
and buy plenty of ice spells (at least 12) and fire spells (at least 6) from
him. Visit Saturas again, as he asked you. You can now ask to join the Guild,
if you like; actually, it would be a good idea.

Xardas
------

If you are finished, we will leave the New Camp and consult the map. You are
going to the unmarked part of the map, to the SW, in search of Xardas. You
will see on the map a path that enters the region but seems to lead nowhere.
To get there you will have to enter a gate to the SW the Old Camp, and the
guards will attack you. Knock them out. And no more Mr Nice - kill them when
they are out, or they'll attack you again if you come this way.

Follow the path and don't take the right (R) nor the left (L) turnings, carry
on past a tower on your R, fork L, continue and you'll come to a "crossroads".
Take the 1st fork R (you will see a huge tower in the distance), next fork L,
fight the beasts and take the next fork to the R.

You should be in a canyon. Equip your orc hammer because you are about to meet
a Stone Golem; you should have no trouble with him. Examine his remains and
get his heart. Equip a fire bolt spell so that all you have to do is to
quickly press Control + up the moment you see the Ice Golem; keep belting him
till he's dead and, again, get his heart. The next one is much tougher, so
save, equip an ice bolt spell and, when you see the Fire Golem, let fly; you
might need to run backwards to keep your distance while you are hurling ice
bolts at him. Once more, collect his heart.

Continue along the canyon and take the door you'll see on your right. In a
room off this one you'll have a strange conversation with a Fire Demon. If you
give him all three hearts you'll get a Teleport to Necromancer rune. You can
check out the chests here, the Demon won't mind, then teleport and check out
the chests; go the only way you can up a ladder and hold a conference with
Xardas. At the end of that, you've got yet another task (before you go, ask to
see his goods and see if you fancy any of his spells).

Now, I couldn't find my way out of here (although you could save and try to
jump acrobatically into the water as you leave Xardas, to the left) so I
teleported to the Swamp Camp which was nearer to where I wanted to be. First
of all, make your way to the Fort up the zigzaggy road to talk to Lester where
you left him (in the room with the pentagram), thus completing Diego's mission.
Then take the path which will take over the bridge to the ruins. You will see
the shaman being attacked by Orcs, so kill them all and he will be very
grateful. Listen to what he has to say. You can now equip your orc hammer,
find the switch on the wall near the troll (the floor collapses), jump in, kill
the stone golem for experience points, find some potions, press a switch on the
wall and, when the column comes down, hop on it to get out.

You can also enter the tower here and climb up a platform and up a ramp. Save.
Climb the wall in front of it and walk along the beam as you turn to your left
(carefully) till you reach the end. Then turn left to face another platform
and, if you have the Acrobatics skill you should be able to reach it. Pull
yourself up to the top of the tower and collect the next Old Book. Read it.

Now you can teleport to Xardas (buy some spells from him, particularly Shrink
Monster), then to Saturas and report to him as well. Speak to Riordian who
will give you a message.

The Free Mine
-------------

Leave the big cave and, with the Bar in front of you, turn to your left and go
up the slope to Gorn. Just as you are ready to head for the mine, he asks you
to go talk to Wolf. Do so and he will tell you about an armour and teach you
how to get the plates. Buy a razor from him if you don't already have one.
OK, go join Gorn who will very politely ask you to lead the way.

Just follow the path and kill any beasties you find. When you enter the mine,
you will see a dead body. Gorn immediately volunteers to stay behind. Save.
Stop a bit: as you go down, take time go up the wooden ramp and find a dead
chap called Okyl, because he had a wonderful weapon. Go on down to the gate
and you'll meet Jackal and two guards. They attack you and you must kill them
dead, which is difficult because you can't do so while you are being attacked
and they all keep getting up. Be very careful not to hit Gorn by mistake.
When that little episode is over, facing the gate, look to your right and open
the door to the room with the winch. Use it to open the gate. Save.

Be aware that there is a bug with Gorn in which he might attack you or do other
strange things. If necessary, reload and start again.

Now you can go through. What follows is a bit of a nightmare because, as
before, you have to kill the guards quite dead and you can't do so when people
are shooting at you from platforms. If you attempt to climb a ladder to get at
them, they just push you off. Plus it's dark and you have to keep casting
Light spells to see where you are going. Try hiding under the platforms, out
of sight of the shooters till they relax, then attempt once more to go up the
ladders unseen; alternatively, shoot it out with them.

The Shadows will run away from you (let them), and don't hurt the scrapers,
none of this is their fault.

What you have to do here is to find the Orc in the lowest level, fighting all
the way and killing all the minecrawlers you can find (remembering to take the
plates). If you keep going downwards you will eventually come to him on a
platform, climb up to join him. He asks for his medicine and here I nearly
went bananas trying to find it. First get off the platform and fight some
crawlers nearby. Then go down a slope past the wooden ramp which goes up and
fight some more crawlers to get them out of the way. Start again going down
this slope and on your right you'll see a ledge with some mushrooms: jump to
it or climb up to it from below and you'll find the Orc Medicine. Take it to
him. Right.

Do you have enough plates for the armour (you need 15)? Because you could
always climb up behind Tarrok and pick your way down carefully to find more
crawlers right at the bottom and then it's just a question of climbing back up.
At any rate, leave the mine when you are ready. Walk past Gorn without
talking to him and when you reach the gate he will join you and have a brief
chat with you.

The Talisman
------------

Go and take the plates to Wolf. Do whatever you need to do here then teleport
to the Swamp Camp. Find a swampshark and kill it for its teeth; head for Balor
and go straight on and you will encounter plenty, but one will do. Leave the
camp. Outside, look at your map: you need to follow the first fork to the
right of the dotted path. This will lead you to a shipwreck. Before you do
that, go as if you were going to the Old Camp and as soon as you come out of
the woods, look to your right. There is a lurker by the river. Kill it and
swim to the long bank of sand, kill everything there and you will find the next
Chromanin book by the large boulder. Read it.

If you want to continue with this particular quest, teleport to Saturas, go
outside the camp, and go to your right. Ignore the two caves in the rockface
and go to the derelict fishermen's huts. Swim across to the other side, kill
the lurker and get the Old Book. Read it. Now teleport to the Swamp Camp and
find your way to the shipwreck.

Before you go on the sand equip the talisman Ur Shak gave you. As you go down
to the beach keep to your right, since to the left there are many more fire
lizards. To the right you will find three, not too hard to kill - get their
tongues. The Old Book is between the two pieces of the ship. Read it. Get
into the water and swim to the right and enter a cave. You are now below the
Tower in which the whole Chromanin thing started. Go to the place where you
killed the Skeleton Mage with the first book and you will find a dead body.
Search it - the last Chromanin book is blank. Get what you need. Then you'll
have to fight another lot of Skeleton Mages and their minions. At the end,
collect their Summon Skeleton spells and you could do your trick again in a
corridor to get more experience points. OK, that concludes the strange
Chromanin business.

Leave the Tower and get back on the path that leads to the bridge N of the Old
Camp's N gate. When you cross the bridge you will have to kill the guards.
Ignoring the paths leading left and right go straight N and up the canyon.
Before you get to the end of it equip the Shrink Monster spell and as soon as
you get to a reasonable distance of the Troll you'll find there, cast it. The
beast will then be easy to kill, get his tusks.

Walk through the woods till you meet a shadowbeast, kill it and get it's tusk.
You'll find a couple to the right of the path in the woods between the Old
Camp and the Swamp Camp.

Anyway, once you have all four ingredients get back to Tarrok in the Free Mine
and he will make the standard for you. You will notice you cannot teleport
anywhere and that is because when you go back up again past the Gorn in the
mine and right outside the gate, he will talk to you and it'll be...

CHAPTER 5

If you go to Wolfie, he'll have the armour ready for you. Now is your chance
to trade, rest, etc. and then you'll have to go to the...

Orc Town
--------

OK, as soon as you are through the gates to the Orc lands (where you killed the
two guards) equip the standard Tarrok made for you. Guiding yourself with the
map, go to the Orc Town. On the way you will meet your old Orcish pal and you
must talk to him. Then cross the bridge; of course, you could unleash some
Summon Demon or Summon Golem and kill everybody and collect a lot of points.
However, let's do it the gentle way, with the Ulu Mulu equipped. Have a look
around - nobody will attack you but some very pesky orcs attach themselves to
you. Use the winch to open the gate.

Start exploring, keep left. In the first "home" you will come to you'll find a
chest with an all-important orc teleport spell. Carry on exploring and you
will see a whole bunch of shamans adoring an idol. Behind them there is a gate
and you will note that the lever doesn't work. Get close to the gate and cast
the orc teleport spell, then move smartly away from the gate because the
shamans will start chucking fireballs at you.

The Temple
----------

Cast a light spell so that you can see where you are going. You can now equip
the heftiest weapon you have. I'm going to keep going mostly left in order not
to miss anything.

In this first chamber you have to find the beam to walk across to the entrance
to the temple. Go up the stairs and be ready to fight the skeletons, then run
quickly in and around the semicircular dip to get at the Mage Skeleton who is
invoking more of them. Kill it, pick up what it was carrying, clear the area
of skeletons and have a good look around. Note the panel with a three colour
code (red, yellow and purple). Go back to the entrance to this room turn your
back on it and take the first door on your left. Press the switch and the door
will open. As you go in, the gate in front of you closes and two side ones
open. Kill the skeletons and, with your back to the door through which you
came in, press the switch in the cell to the left and then the one to the
right. Go through the big gate. Save your game.

After the aggressive skeleton, we have three switches to turn. Go to the red
one, Control + up, then Control + up again. This will turn the switch. You
have to be quick and do the yellow and the purple switches in the same way.
You'll get a video clip of gates opening. If you don't see this, start again
and be quicker.

Well, now, so many gates open, where do we go? I think I'll stay on this
level. Through the double gates, run to the back of the room to get at the
Mage Skeleton (search him), and clear the room. Have a look around. I'm going
to try again the first door to the left from the entrance.

Press the switch and you will face a Temple Guard. Then, with your back to the
door through which you entered, turn to your left and turn the switch. You
will see things happening. Leave here and go to the now open door. Save your
game. Prepare yourself to meet Varrag-Hastor, be ready with your weapon and
run to him. Eventually you'll be able to reach him and kill him. Take
everything he is carrying, particularly the sword, and the spell on the slab.
As you leave, "use" the Strange Shrine circle and you'll be able to get out.

Leaving this room head left and up some square columns, kill the Temple Guard
and look at the panels on your right. Go through here, fight Unhilgt (don't
forget to get his sword), go to the altar, climb up, walk over the grille and
bump against the switch; the grille opens. Shoot at the upper switch and you
can drop through when it's safe and get a good sword. Search the mummies.
Press the green button on the sarcophagus. Out.

Now let's go down a level. Many crawlers here. This time keep right. You'll
come up to a room in which there are three switches, the order in which you
turn them is top, left and right. Every time you turn a switch a demon
appears, but they are easy to kill. Before you turn the last one save, because
you'll fight the next Varrag. Again, once he's dead, get the sword he is
carrying.

Go back to the other branch of the tunnel, jump out at the end and examine the
antechamber - you'll see another of those panels with folks shooting at a
target. Go through to the main chamber and fight the crawlers - let them come
to you. Also you'll have to fight Gor Boba; kill him dead. Right, now that
the coast is clear you can have a good look around. A lot of closed doors. Go
into the room with open doors and search for a switch. A wall disappears and
you can get some good things. Go back to the switch and look at the wall next
to it. High up, you will see a target. Leave the room and stand just outside
the door where you can still see the target, then shoot at it. If you hit it
the gates of this room will close and spikes will come up. Soon, the spikes
disappear and the gates open again. Go inside and look at the wall opposite
the target, its descending. A panel will open, shoot at the target which you
will see behind.

You will see some gates open so go to that room, entering through the nearest
door. You will see a switch to the top and two to your right. The correct
order in which to turn them is top, bottom and middle, if that makes sense to
you. At any rate, that opens the gate Gor Boba was guarding.

Go in, fight whoever you need to fight (killing the fanatics) and keep straight
on. You will see some lava to your left, keep going up and fighting and you
will lots of closed gates and an open room with a lot of jars and some
pictures. Nothing much here but a couple of potions. Go back and turn left,
again fight if you have to. To your right, you can reach a chest if you walk
the plank. Go on from the chest and stop in front of the door between the
statues. Watch the sequence in which the spikes come up so that you can cross
safely.

In the next room, cross the bridge and follow the main path. You are on a
circular ledge and, on your right, you pass rooms with switches and demons. Go
into each one, kill the demons and turn the switch. At the last one you will
see a bridge has been formed, so go back to the beginning of this ledge and
save your game; cross the bridge, step in and out quickly of this room until
the spikes disappear. Go ahead and fight Ruuushk, getting all he carries and
the Strange Sword on the altar. Run quickly out of this room before the spikes
get you.

Now face the bridge over which you came into this complex and go left over a
narrow bridge. As you walk along you will see a cave entrance to your left.
You can go in and find two little interesting caves and some crawlers, though
this isn't important. You could just follow the long tunnel with double arches
till you come out into another lava job.

Jump to the centre altar being very careful not to fall into the lava. Turn
the switch and you will go down, get off. The switch on the wall here calls
the lift down again. For now, walk along this corridor and, in the altar room,
wade to the left and turn the switch. This opens all those gates we saw before
and dumps some crawlers on you. Take the lift up and get yourself over there,
remembering the spikes after the main bridge.

Go to towards the leftmost open gate but enter a room to your right as you pass
it. As ever in these games, you get the best weapons at the end, so pick up
the Troll Fist (100% damage). Then go to the last two gates, go in and kill
the fanatic. Proceed along here killing demons and another fanatic. Cross the
bridge and you talk to a very cross guy. If you try to hit him you will find
that you don't make a dent (try it nevertheless) so run away as fast as you
can.

At this point I tried to teleport to Xardas but couldn't, so I had to fight
more nasties on my way to the exit. Here! I thought I'd cleared the place on
the way in! Maybe this was the night shift? At the exit, get close to the
locked entry gate and see if you can cast Teleport on the Figurine and get it
right into your hand. I managed it, but don't worry if you can't. Teleport to
Xardas and talk to him.

The Colony
----------

Teleport to Saturas and get trained, if you want. Leave and head for the S.
If you look at the map you will see a place surrounded by water, E of Xardas'
home. Getting there will take some doing but, hey, the Necromancer needs time
to get his act together.

When you see the half-submerged tower swim to it, enter it and save your game.
I couldn't find any instructions on swimming in the manual so, like me, you'll
have to experiment with ALT + arrow up, arrow down, to go down or up then CTRL
+ ALT to move along. It will drive you nuts - but if you persevere you should
be able to make it. The object of the exercise here is to swim straight down a
shaft and straight up another one into another section of the tower which for
some reason is full of undead. When you've killed them all you will be left in
peace to find four chests which contain, amongst other things, a magic ore
armour and a teleport rune to the Magicians of Fire which will take you inside
the Old Camp, and wouldn't that be fun?

You don't have to do this, but you can now teleport to the Old Camp and
confront Gomez. You'll pop up in the Temple and it will be a relatively easy
matter to kill your attackers (get Bartholo's key), then you can go outside.
Save before you do. Unfortunately, everybody out there wants to have a go at
you and they don't leave you alone long enough to kill the guards and so they
are forever getting up. So, before you leave the temple, cast about four
Summon Demon spells and the monsters will go out and start killing everybody.
Follow behind them mopping up and, if necessary, cast some more Summon Demon or
even a Summon Golem.

If you don't want to do that, the best thing is to rush inside the Castle
where, between the rooms, there are very narrow archways and people can't mob
you, so you have more leisure in killing them. Other than that, run around to
try and isolate a few people at a time, but it is imperative you kill them
otherwise you could spend the rest of your life at it. You should be able to
kill Gomez (collect what he is carrying), Raven and his other cronies. The
only person who doesn't seem to be after you is Skip. As Bartholo told you,
Stone the smith is in the gaol. Go free him with Gomez's key and he will be
grateful. Let him go and, if you meet him at the smithy, he will mend your ore
armour for you, making it perfect.

Anyway, if you've had a good romp around the Castle and the Old Camp settling
accounts (don't hurt anyone running from you, will you?) you can now teleport
to the Necromancer.

Talk to him about the sword. You also find out that if you are a magician of
the 6th Circle you can have a rune made out of the sword. Make sure you buy at
least four Summon Golem spells. Hello, here comes...

CHAPTER 6

Teleport to the Magicians of Water, where you will meet Milten. Talk to him
and he will quietly draw you to the Library. Talk some more and you agree to
meet at the foot of the ore mound. Go back to the room with the pentagram and
go through the other door, all the way down to the mound. Presently Milten
will join you and all you have to do is watch the video clip. Right, that
didn't go down too well, so teleport to the Temple courtyard in the Swamp Camp
and from there make it to the Orc Town.

If you didn't get the Figurine from inside the Temple, then it's entirely up to
you: you could equip the orc standard and make a quiet entry into town or you
could slaughter all the warriors, but not the orcs who do not attack. When you
get to the courtyard in front of the idol the shamans are worshipping, you are
going to have to cast telekinesis to shift the Figurine to the ground where you
can get hold of it. However, this will set the shamans off, so you might like
to kill them beforehand. Up to you. At any rate, get the Figurine and this
time you will be able to use the lever to open the gate to the Temple.

You do remember the way? Down the stairs, over the slab, up the other stairs,
head straight for the underground passage, keep left, through the gate Gor Boba
was guarding, straight on, through the last door on the left, round the corner
and on. When I got to the last shaman he just stood there like a lemon without
moving, so it was an easy matter to kill him - get his sword and go left and up
the stairs, you'll meet a couple of Apocalyptic Templars, but no great problem.

You'll get to a chamber with a pentagram on the ground and five "Strange
Shrines". Use them all (you automatically stick in them the swords you got
from the shamans) and the gate will open. Going through you'll meet Xardas,
who will tell you about the five hearts and the five swords. Then he'll pass
out on you.

In this room, the two top exits lead to chests with potions; check out the
mummies, too. Either of the two exits at the bottom (i.e., left and right of
the door through which you came in) will lead to the Sleeper. I would be a
good idea at this point to equip all the fire protection you've got and save
your game. Take either door and you will end up at some arches, go through and
see if you can quietly take out the two Apocalyptic Templars at the top of the
stairs. Behind the shelter of the large slab before the stairs, you could now
summon four Stone Golems. Go to the stairs and Cor Kalom speaks and then you
should make a bee line for him and take him out as quickly as you can. Deal
with the Obsessed Novices; the golems should help.

Harassed as you will be, take each of the stone pillars around the altar, one
at a time, open them and "use the hearts" (i.e., you stick a sword through
them, make sure you've done that); each time you'll have to deal with a Demon
Lord. Be patient and thorough.

When the last heart is pierced you've reached the end of the game, watch the
finale. A bit disappointing but only a bit.

Roll on, Gothic II!
